Embrace Relaxed Summer Pace With Song, Film & Fun
by Paul Kashmann

As the seasons change, so do the traditions that make them memorable. Few images better recall memories of summers past, than warm breezy evenings spent on a park lawn, or at an outdoor movie theatre, enjoying a pleasant concert or popular film, or a toasty afternoon at a local celebration with a happy group of neighbors and friends.
From Four Mile Park on the banks of Cherry Creek, to the towering spires of Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver residents can look forward to a summer full of memories in the making.

Cherry Creek North Films On Fillmore
Fillmore St. Plaza
between 1st and 2nd Avenues

The Cherry Creek North retail district continues to evolve into new iterations of its venerable role as Denver’s most popular retail shopping district. Hundreds of shops, galleries and restaurants line the streets from 1st to 3rd Ave., and from University Blvd./Josephine St. over to Steele St.
Construction continues on both sides of Fillmore Plaza, between 1st and 2nd Avenues – the NorthCreek development to the west, and Donald Sturm’s One Fillmore Place to the east. Regardless, the plaza will once again be home to the popular Films on Fillmore series, which is expected to draw more than 1,200 people each week to the free Thursday night showings.
Films on Fillmore gives attendees the option of picking up their dinner from one of the 50-plus Cherry Creek North restaurants, or bringing their own picnic to enjoy. Movies begin at dusk, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. You may bring your own blanket or lawn chair, or rent a chair on the plaza for $2.
For those who don’t find their way to the show in environmentally sensitive fashion, auto parking is available for film series attendees in the Clayton Lane parking garage at 2nd Ave. and Columbine St.

City Park Jazz
The Ferrill Lake Pavilion

Some things do get better with age, and the City Park Jazz summer series seems to be one of them. Two decades back, in 1986, a small group of neighbors thought how nice it would be to be able to bring the community together for an evening of family, friends, music and community fellowship. That first season featured five concerts and a total summer’s audience of around 25,000 people. This year, organizers have planned twice that number of shows, and expect more than 60,000 people to enjoy a summer Sunday evening on the west shore of Ferrill Lake listening to some of Denver’s favorite performers.
The 2008 schedule is a varied lot, including an eclectic mix of straightahead jazz, swing, salsa and blues. All shows are held at the Ferrill Lake Pavilion (exceept June 15 and July 13), run 6-8p.m., and concert-goers are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic (some food is available for purchase on-site), and to take some time to explore Denver’s namesake greenspace. While non-motorized transport takes pressure off the surrounding neighborhoods (the park is closed to vehicles on Sundays, and BikeDenver provides safe storage during concerts), the Museum of Nature & Science garage and parking lots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

July 6,  LC’s Latin Groove
July 13,  The Sheryl Renee Band (in the meadow south of the pavilion)
July 20,  Cocktail Revolution
July 27,  Lisa Bell and Crescendo  •  Aug. 3,  Funkiphino

Shady Grove Picnic Concerts
sponsored by Swallow Hill
at Four Mile Historic Park, 715 S. Forest St.

If your idea of music-to-die-for is 20,000 people crammed into the Pepsi Center at 80 bucks a pop, then this might not be the place for you. However, should an hour or so of first-rate music performed under a canopy of trees on the lawn of Denver’s oldest residence be up your alley, you’ll want to make it out to Four Mile Historic Park for the Wednesday evening series, presented this summer in memory of Carol Gossard.
The 2008 Shady Grove series features an ever-widening selection of folk, jazz, classical, bluegrass and blues performers, providing a perfect backdrop for an early evening picnic in the fresh summer’s air. For information on individual performers, visit www.swallowhill.com. All shows begin at 6p.m. Cost is $7 for Swallow Hill members, $10 for non-members; $2 for children under age 13.
